The Space Between
We’d marvel should it prove some mind devised
Planets, bright stars and complex galaxies:
Placing them in relationships so fine
That they, (from ancient times through to this day),
Stayed recognisable upon the skies
As astrological phenomena
Balanced amidst unstable cosmic flux.
Nor would we wonder less to learn that mind —
Which could invent, (with such fine art and wealth
Of science far surpassing human sense),
These splendid holographic signs that guide
Our startled eyes towards infinity —
Also conceived the pregnant space between:
That vast, intangible, invisible
Effect of nothingness which generates
All known existence in its ambience?.
The beauties of these marvels we can see
Evoke delight, but the enormities
Of inlaid space compel profoundest awe!.
How could this inexplicable great void,
(Patently lethal in its entropies),
Be source of all materiality
And nursery of living sentience
Evolving in space-time’s strange crucuble?.
How can we solve this seeming-paradox,
When human intellects can’t comprehend
The real dimensions of our universe,
Nor understand their own significance
Within the contradictions space suggests?.
Space poses questions which we can’t ignore:
So we must try to pierce its mysteries,
(Seeking the basic laws secreted there),
To crack the coded meanings they contain.
Nor should we be afraid to meet a mind –
If such exists outwith the universe –
That with deep diligence and maven care
Has guarded our frail being from such potent force
As would annihilate us, if not held in pause!.
