           Antigone and Hæmon

Her blind, self-mutilated, misconstrued,

     Unfortunate fraternal father dead,

     Faithful Antigone returned toThebes.

She found her sibling Polynices slain,

     With brother Eteocles, for the crown,

     And left to rot upon the field. Her heart

Compelled their burial, despite Creon’s

     Decree; and for this charity was strait

     Immured, to die unfed.

                                                   But to her side

One loyal, honourable soul stepped near,

     To bring her consolation to the last;

     Brave Hæmon, her betrothed, who steadfastly

Had waited her return from exile and now chose

To share the tragic torment of her sad life’s close.
