To God the Glory
“To God the glory!” says the lofty spire:
A finger of admonishment that points
To Heaven above Salisbury. Our eyes
Are forced upwards and for a moment – brief
And calm – our hearts acknowledge Deity
As supervisor of all that we know,
Have, hope and need during our daily rounds.
But then we wrench our minds to Earth again
And its vain trivialities of rage
And selfish greed and prideful arrogance.
“To God the glory”, we may think, is right
And proper; yet there is a time and place
To render adulation. So, for now,
We slyly pray: “To us the benefits!”.
