               The Reason Why

(There Was No Better Way Than This)

          Why was I born?

That’s an odd question to a man

          About to die!.

But since you ask, I’ll answer you.

          The reason why

Is this: Unless I shewed Myself

To be human in every way,

Taking that nature for My own,

My mission could have no success.

          My Father said

There was no better way than this.

          Why am I here

Sentenced, like you, to hang today

          Upon a Cross,

A spectacle for gawping crowds?.

          The reason why

Is this: Unless I die in sight

Of My detractors and descend

Into the tomb before their eyes,

I cannot prove My promises.

          My Father thought

There was no better way than this.

          Why must I die

To win success?. The reason why

          Is this: I bear

The faults of all mankind with Me

          Upon these nails.

Those yet unborn, and those condemned

From Adam onwards to this day,

Are saved by My last sacrifice;

Their sins, by My blood, washed away.

          My Father claimed

There was no better way than this.

          Why don’t I curse

Those whom, it seems, have wrongfully

          Brought Me to feel

This agonising, shameful death?.

          The reason why

Is this: I always knew My fate

Was this; they aren’t to blame. Besides,

I’ll rise, in three days, from My grave

As proof of My divinity.

          My Father knew

There was no better way than this.

          Why is there need

For death, or resurrection, when

          God can command

All things?. The reason why is this:

          If people are

By My example so inspired

To learn of Our great love for them,

They might desire to share that love

And choose to give their souls to Us.

          And now I know

There was no better way than this!.
