Surely the charming phrase, the lavish gift,

The brilliant display, are mere attires

     Of courting-rituals, designed for swift

          Submission to lust’s transient desires?.

Do not the birds and beasts, to gratify

Instinctive urges, flatter each their sort

With such overt expressions, to comply

In consummating ardour – then depart?

Seduction has one target for its art

Which, once achieved, extinguishes the flame

That warmed its passion, leaving a hurt heart

          Abandoned by indifference to pain.

So is this what you want from me?. Or would you have

The subtler secrecies of more enduring love?.
