Love-Hate Relationships
Know this: the boundary that separates
Rapturous loves from paroxysmal hates
Is less substantial than air’s density.
As East from West is indivisible,
(Because their loci are invisible
And found by local relativity),
So love and hate exist in such close touch
Nobody knows precisely quite how much
Each one includes its psycho-counterpart.
From out those neural complexes that bind
Reactions to strong stimuli, the mind
Cannot distinguish, for a startled heart,
That rationale which leads it to associate
Particular response with either love or hate.
