(Margaret Bennett née Mortlock)

 (b.22/9/1931; d. 1/2/2009)

Morty, our darling ‘Queen of Hearts’, we mourn.

Broken-hearted, you left us suddenly;

And we who loved you are ourselves reduced

Also to broken-heartedness.

                                             Throughout

Your long and dedicated life you were

So full of generosity and warmth

To all who needed comfort and support –

Winning thereby our timeless gratitude –

That your departure leaves us quite bereft.

What bitter irony it was that he,

Whom you had cared for in his youth and whom

You later chose for partner, was the cause

Of your grief and of ours!.

                                              At such a time,

And in such circumstance, even the words

Of poets can be overwhelmed until

Distance allows emotion to subside

Sufficiently to be transformed, composed, refined

Into a homage worthy of your special kind.
