(After Chaos, by James Gleik, which asserts that chaos

is not random but minutely structured and calculable)

Chaos, (some say), is not what it’s been deemed

     For generations immemorial.

Chaos has structure, (so such people say),

     As regular and as predictable

As any concept science yet has dreamed.

Appearances deceive perception’s eyes,

(They say); beneath its superficial signs

Chaos is organised in detailed schemes –

Rich, intricate arrangements of designs –

Which seem discordant yet are harmonies.

If it is true that Chaos is the primal source

Of Nature’s order, still its strange residuum

Conspires to contradict those scientific laws

     Which posit universal equilibrium.
