                      Zeitgeisten

Crisp light with sharp-edged shade

          Starkly contrasted;

Pale sunshine by enveloped

          Cloud-glooms blasted;

Storm-winds and wintry showers

          Blent together;

Bare trees exposed to torments

          Of rough weather;

Flash-floods and frost-foam

          Icily combined

In filaments, by windy

          Chisels fined;

Soft snow, hard hail and moody

          Mistiness

Squeezed out by bitter

          Atmosphere’s cold press;

Tempest-tossed birds blown

          Wildly far and wide;

Cowering creatures that

          In deep dens hide:

All these prefigure Spring’s

          Fresh generosity

And luscious Summer’s mellower

          Maturity,

That blindly do their best

          To find and grope

Whatever there may be

          Of future hope.
