                                A Spell

            (For the release of a Giant)

          Amanatha!. Zaranthula!.

I call upon the powers of the sky!.

     (Come thunder, lightning, storm-bred wind!).

          Paranatol!. Baracadum!.

     (Come, quake and rockfall, fluxive flame!).

          Catuthanap!. Barrangabin!.

     (Come waterfall, tsunami, flood!).

          Eractumon!. Fantulimac!.

     (Come delvers and excisioners!).

          Gorimbolo!. Herretacop!.

     (Come mystic solving agencies!).

          Immolok!, Nobinod!, Jammos!.

     (Come deities of woodland rites!).

     I call upon the powers of the air;

     I call upon the powers of the earth;

     I call upon the powers of the waves!.

Combine your potent forces and create

          Fantastical and irresistible

Spells to release from his unfortunate

Imprisonment that Giant who entreats

     The alchemical aid of poetry

To end his undeserved captivity

Under the woodlands near my house!.

     Transmute the essences of sky!;

     Transform the elements of earth!;

     Transpose the mysteries of waves!;

Now metamorphose all your parts

     Into compulsive confluence

          Of liberating energy!.

     Meld into ultimate omnipotence

The noumenal with the phenomenal

That in your varied aspects are dispersed!.

     Come in your unifying amplitude

And, in the vastness of your might,

Evoke the puissance of creativity!.

     Pour all your elemental powers through

          The magic matrix of my spell.

Release the Giant from his living Hell!.

Come all!. Combine your forces in fantastical

     And irresistible proud potency,

          In order to produce

     A charm whose magic force

Will liberate this huge unfortunate

    From his predicament!.

From Amanatha and Zaranthula

To Immolok, Nobinod and Jammos;

     I ask this favour so that he —

The hapless mountain Giant trapped

There at the margin of the wood —

     Can finally return agian

          To his high home.

               Amanatha!. Jammos!.

          My invocation is complete.

     Now, through its potent charm,

 I break the theurgic ties that bind

     The Giant in his woodland plight.

               He is at liberty again!.
