                              Doubt

Why need I boast my love in ringing tones

To tell you what, already, you must know?.

Does not my patient lingering, nearby,

Speak more than sounding words could ever say?.

Should I resort to flattering remarks,

Would you not hear a voice ask in your inner ear,

“What is it that is hid behind this smooth veneer?”.

Is silence not more eloquent to shew

The faithful loyalty of honest love,

Than all the stolen words of false romance

          Copied from lexicons and novelettes

By those uncertain of their constancy?.

I tell you that it is!. Any you would surely doubt

My feelings more, if I should start to speak them out!.
