Engravings
Queen Mary Tudor once declared her heart
Would be found graved with CALAIS when she died
Because, through unwise policies of State,
She lost that Channel guard-post to the French.
When my time comes to die, perhaps that same
Part will be found graved ANNE , (bitterly gride),
Because the favour of her love has flew
As my too doubtful treatment of her quenched
Her high ambitions.
Now, set far apart
From her affections by her injured pride,
I find my life suffused with painful rue,
For I am lonely and disconsolate.
Why did the Great Engraver not inscribe, at birth,
The sign for TRUST upon my heart to void this hurt?.
