St George

St. George

(23rd April)

     Lance couched you launched full at the giant foe;
The pestilential, flame-shot breath you braved;
The vicious talons, mighty tail, gross jaws
Contended; and triumphantly subdued:
Not for your glory but to liberate,
From monstrous tyranny, the innocent.

     Long years ago our Patron you became
And proudly your Cross-emblem we displayed
For centuries: whilst in more recent times
Your courage we adopted, as our own,
When greater evils stalked our continent
Laying it waste. Like you, we overcame!.

     Forever, brave St. George, watch overEngland’s parts

     And, in adversity, encourage English hearts!
