                                             Coal

It came from the depths of Earth,

Hewn forth by men’s rude skills.

Now it flames within my hearth

And heavenwards distils.

Long ago it was a tree,

     Part of an ancient wood.

Now it burns to render me

The warmth of its life-blood.

It came from the depths of Earth,

     A vestige of life gone.

Now it blazes in my hearth,

Its crematorium.
