The Quest
In vain I sailed on various seas,
Fruitlessly trudged misleading tracks
Through steaming forests and across
Soul-scouring deserts’ arid screes.
Poor heir of Cook, Livingstone, bold
Burton, I long traversed the world
In search of self-fulfilment’s wealth;
But nowhere could I find that gold.
Almost faith failed to hold hope’s dreams;
Almost despair destroyed life’s schemes.
But then, deep in my secret self, I saw
The sought-for treasure. My delusions lost,
I mined experience’s ore who yield
Outbuys the sum of Earth’s material store.
