                      St Anthony

               (After: SalvadorDali)

Such terrible hallucinations came to haunt

The holy anchorite, in his hot desert cell,

He thought that he was going mad from loneliness.

Voluptuous houris danced before his eyes, both day

And night, lasciviously luring him to taste

The promised pleasures of their scented, supple flesh.

Bizarre beasts rampaged near and far, burdened with rich

Rare stuffs and jewelled ornaments, offering him

Treasures beyond all calculation, luxuries

Exceeding those enjoyed by mighty Emperors.

Ascetic Anthony prayed desperately that these

Temptations should dissolve before his faith should fail.

The love of God was all that he desired to own. It was

Enough for him to contemplate his Lord upon the Cross.
