                        Bond of Union

                     (After: M.C. Escher)

Joined by a seamless bond, yet each distinct,

The artist and his wife appear, (stylised

     In three dimensional transparency

     Pre-dating holographic imagery),

Linked at both brow and neck; the spiral band

Binds them more closely than gold wedding-rings.

     “We form a perfect unity of two

     That nothing can divorce”, their portrait says.

This graphic symbol of uxorious

Affinity depicts an ideal love

     Of kindred spirits sharing life’s concerns

     So congruently that both live as one.

We cannot all lay claim to such a state of grace;

For some of us a sadder fate has taken place.
