                                Saddam Hussein

                                       (1990)

          Saddam, the latest tyrant born to taunt

     Democracy’s pacific trend and flaunt

     Contempt for liberty and human rights,

     Provoking neighbours into bitter fights

     In hopes of vantage through confused recoil

     From economic ruin on their soil.

          Ruthless conspirer, vicious autocrat

     Of tribal factions, ruler by diktat;

     This would-be new Colossus stands so tall

     His pride’s huge vanity must bring his fall

     When Nemesis, (as is her wont), descends

     In Hubris’ shadow to effect amends.

About Saddam both myth and history are agreed:

He’ll only be proved great if all his plans succeed.
